Dennis....I was there that year too.
Was it ever determined what was causing the problems with the radios?
I was flying a JR PCM10 on 53.100 ham band and I didn't have any trouble.

Richard,
It was 1989 and was held in the Tri-Cities WA. Pattern was at the Kennewick
Airport on an old runway. (It is now gone) That was the year the wind blew
so hard and the dust and sand was so bad everyone was wrapping their engines
in rags to keep the sand out. I live in Richland, which is part of the
Tri-Cities, and have some not so great video of that event. I wasn't flying
pattern back then but took a week off from work to attend several of the
Nat's events.

Dean,
What year was the Wash. state Nats(Yakima) that most of our radios wouldn't
work? '89? Maybe? It was about the only year I was even half-way
competitive--bummer...

Hi Rich,
During the "Great Toledo Gang Build" of '87 we set off the smoke alarms in
the hotel with the CA fumes!
Remember that Mike?

I got 'hooked' on RC and Monocoted my first airplane(orange/yellow-looked
like crap) in '67 in the dorm. My neighbors(and room mate) routinely
bitched about the odors coming from that room...

'Bout the mid-late sixties, I can remember Mom showing Dad and myself how to
monokote a corner properly,
before we figured out that working with a clothes iron would build strong
muscles!
Seems she was frustrated watching us mess up.

I was around then. Didn't invent It though. I did get chewed out for using
my wife's iron to apply Mono-Cote and Cover All.
