The snap ring doesn't hold the gearbox onto the std C50 motor - it locates /

holds the shaft in place. The std C50 gearbox is threaded onto the motor 
case and locked with a couple of set-screws in the bottom of two of the 
mounting holes.

To remove - loosen the set-screws, then use a pair of strap wrenches to 
unthread the gearbox (hint: Wrap masking tape around the gearbox / motor to 
prevent the straps from slipping.) Assemble in reverse.
