  None of the lipo mfgs or charger mfgs advocate such a practice (forgetting about them).  Some chargers auto-detect cell count and will not allow the user to change the cell count (even if the charger is wrong).  Some chargers require the user to select the cell count and then will not charge unless they agree the selected cell count is accurate - this is a pretty good method as it requires input from the user, requires the charger to agree, and if anything is on the edges/gray areas, the charger's disagreement with the user should prompt further evaluation.
