Jason,
 Yes, you can add it to just the group without adding it to your personal
(main) address list. Go to Contacts view and select the list. Press the Add
New... button. In the dialog box you will fill in the Display Name (the name
that appears in the address list when you send Email) and then the Email
address of the person. There is a check box that says: Add to contacts.
Leave it "unchecked" if you don't want to add this person to your main
address list. If you want to add people to the group that are already in
your main Contacts list, use the Select Members... button instead.
