That's 'cause we are ... oh never mind!
If you pick a good low-leakage Schottky diode like an MBR1100, then there won't be any problem with the diode leakage discharging the battery, and the voltage drop would leave you with better than 4.4V on a 5-cell pack with one open. You can buy them at Digi-Key www.digikey.com .
