[NSRCA-discussion] Electric vs. Glow

I agree, but comparing our application to a hybrid car is apples-oranges.

As far as regenerative braking goes, we would not be recharging for more than a few seconds at a time. And, it would be impossible to overcharge the pack due to the inefficiencies of flight.

We are not trying to recharge the flight pack to full capacity while in flight, and that is the big difference between our application and hybrid cars.

The standard charge rate for Lipos is 1C, but what can they tolerate for 5 seconds at a time, with ??? duty cycle, and no possibility of being overcharged? That would be good information.

This problem with Lipo's not taking the higher charge rate would seem to be the biggest factor why the batterie isn't stepping up to widespread uses in industry/Hybrid cars/consumer products. So if we are to get better battery solutions in the future it will probably come from a different technology than the current lithium offerings. So does anyone have a clue what breakthru technology will eventually be the answer?

Regenerative braking is the holy grail for hybrid E vehicles also. While the motor is an effective generator with the controls available, the issue is the ability of the batteries to accept the resulting high charge rate. Some systems have been designed using capacitors to smooth the flow, but large capacity requirements limits practicality. Of course with LiPo charge rates in the 1 - 3C range, this becomes even more problematic for our systems.

Now if they could make the brake regenerative, they would have something!

Jason I hadn't heard about the brake either, any more little things to made things work better.

  Hi Jason,
I'm venturing, or maybe I should say, wading into electric this year. You mentioned the brake eating gears. I'm sure you meant the conventional brake that flat out stops the prop. What's your thought on the Hacker f3a brake that comes with the competition version of the speed control? We haven't seen or heard much of anything about this motor or the controller since the Worlds.

  Thanks,
  Verne Koester
