Thank you Michael-ahh well- looks like the problem is here then and there is nothing I can do about it. So we shall see how it all pans out. Next time I have an IT guy in our workshop I might try and bribe him to do something about it!!

Thanks for the help

Tom

Tom and All,
The new list watches for returned or rejected messages(AKA Bounced Message).
Below is an explanation on bounce processing

Each subscriber is assigned a bounce score, as a floating point number.
Whenever Mailman receives a bounce from a list member, that member's score
is incremented. Hard bounces (fatal errors) increase the score by 1, while
soft bounces (temporary errors) increase the score by 0.5. Only one bounce
per day counts against a member's score, so even if 10 bounces are received
for a member on the same day, their score will increase by just 1.

The bounce score Threshold is 5

The Number of days after which there bounce score is discarded if no bounced
messages have been received is 7

Tom your server is rejecting list mail

You can see one of them here

Reporting-MTA: dns; filter2
Received-From-MTA: DNS; [202.14.247.5]
Arrival-Date: Thu, 26 Jan 2006 02:36:25 +1100 (EST)

Final-Recipient: RFC822; tom.koenig at actewagl.com.au
Action: failed
Status: 5.2.2
Remote-MTA: DNS; gateway02.actewagl.com.au
Diagnostic-Code: SMTP;
552 gateway02.actewagl.com.au: your "received:" header counts
of 16 exceeds maximum setting 15
Last-Attempt-Date: Thu, 26 Jan 2006 02:36:37 +1100 (EST)

The list email is exceeding your maximum "Received" header counts of 15.
This is most likely your server trying to keep out spam.

The Bounce system really helps with the workload of the list. Instead of
all the rejected messages coming to my inbox which was hundreds a day on the
old list. The new list keeps track of them by member and first disables the
account when the bounce score is reached. The list then sends the member 10
messages saying there account has been disabled. 10 Days after the account
is disabled it is removed from the list.

I hope this helps everyone understand a little bit more on how the new list
works. Any questions let me know

While we are kind of on the subject.........

I am getting kicked of the list every now and again due to 'excessive
bounces'. I have never had this happen before in all the years I have been
on the 'list', and all its incarnations.

Is this due to the firewall here at work ( which I can do nothing about) or
is it because of all the recent changes to the list itself ? I must say it
is a little annoying and if it keeps happening I guess I'll have to say
goodbye after being here for the last eight years or so. I might have to
sign up from home...but who has time there to go through e-mails, and the
list is at times what gets me through an otherwise 'challenging' day at work
!!!!!

Thanks for any info-keep it in English please- I am relatively speaking,
'computer challenged' <BG>

Tom
