I was thinking the same thing so I had a look at the list server and  it
turns out I had made a configuration mistake in tightening up  the
security on my DNS configuration.  The mailing list server uses  several
DNS checks on inbound messages to help cut down the spam traffic  and I
had neglected to allow recursive DNS queries from the list  server.  As a
result the list server was returning a temporary error  for incoming
messages for a while.  No messages should have been lost  because of the
nature of the temporary (400 series) error, instead the  servers trying
to hand off messages should have queued them for retry and  they should
be filtering in.

Sorry about that - hopefully folks used  the lack of distraction to make
some balsa dust or Monokote scraps fly  :)
