There's a neat new "starter" by GPSRC (a whole series of them) at much lower cost....

www.gpsrc.com

Low cost way to get into high power Brushless.
(which is pushing this into the thread about enticing beginners...)

Best starter Ive had is the Kavan, best starter battery combination Ive had is the Kavan and 7.5ah gel cell. This starts a YS 1.60, or Webra 1.60 easy...and charge just a few times a year. The incovenience of the size of the gel cell overcomes the smaller size of the NIMH or NIcad packs by the reliability and capacity of the gel cell.

Ive seen the Central in use and it may be strong but looked a little cheesy.

Has anyone had a chance to compare these two? From what I can tell the
main differences are the gearbox and switch mechanism. On wednesday my
old (crappy) starter died at the field with a cracked brush costing me a
day of flying. I ordered Central's starter as soon as I got home, but
now that I understand the Kavan has a planetary gearbox and replacement
brush kits are available I'm wondering if I've made a good choice.

BTW, I'm as big a fan of hand starting as the next guy, but it just
doesn't work @ 5 deg. F on the engines I have unless they are still warm
        from the last flight.
