Subject: [NSRCA-discussion] Too windy
Being home I tried to get a couple of flights today. I Bought a Fliton Quiet Storm last year. Flew it in a crosswind and it lasted one flight J Not sure if it was too tail heavy, excessive control throws or just too windy. It wanted to stall easily so it seemed, and cart wheeled on landing, tearing the wings off. It sat under my building table until recently. I decided to repair it and converted it to plug in wings. Not much else was damaged. I had brought it out to the field three times only to find a strong cross wind and elected not to fly it. Today I brought it out to the field and there was a gale blowing but at least it was down the runway. Why is it always calm at my house but blowing at the field?
First I decided to fly a 6 ½ ounce shocky. Much too windy but I have flown it in the wind before and never had a problem. Quickens your reflexes as it gets blown around 90 degrees at a time. Sort of fun. Today I let it go (hand launch) and the wind blew it straight into the ground nose first shattering the foam from an inch in front of the wing J Not field repairable.
I was tired of waiting to see if the quiet storm would be better behaved than the fist ill fated flight so I flew that as well. Took off between gusts and it did seem better behaved. Less surface throws and more forward CG. Landing was not bad and it didn't touch down hard but pulled a gear out. Just split the plywood from the center lamination in the shape of the gear leg. Not that I would have flown it again today anyway.
So much for flying today J
