[NSRCA-discussion] Box poles

In North Carolina clay it has worked well to drive steel fence posts (farm fencing) and simply drop a piece of PVC over them. They maybe a little shaky at first but after a few months they will require mechanical assistance to remove. I don't know about taller than 10 feet or so.

I don't like rebar for posts because they tend to get lost over time and present a dangerous hazard to flesh & farm equipment.

We were not permitted to place permanent posts in the pit/parking area so we made up some 5 gallon buckets of concrete with a sleeve in the center to accept a round tube as a post. I believe they would support pretty tall poles without needing to be permanent. You don't want to carry one far and they are a whole lot more work to make than it sounds like!

  Subject: [NSRCA-discussion] Box poles

  Hey Guys,

I am looking for some ideas for setting up some permanent box poles. At our GA jets field, we have a tree line that is right at 150 meters from the runway. The club is going to let us put up some poles and leave them up since they will be in the tree line and not in the way. So, I just wanted some ideas as to how other people have done this.

We were thinking of digging some holes in the ground and placing some concrete and a large size PVC pipe in the ground to serve as a receptor for a slightly smaller pole. This should work well for 4 of the poles. The ones on the right side will be below a hill. So, they would either have to be attached up in tree, or we do a similar plan as before and make a really tall pole. How tall can these poles be without breaking in the wind?

I would appreciate any ideas or examples of how this was done at your field.

  Thanks,
  Emory Schroeter.
