F3A judges for local comps

Hi All,
Thanks for all the responses.
I appreciate the time taken to discuss this topic.
I believe anyone can be a good FAI judge (even a sportsman) but it is going
to take time. Most of our sportsmen break out into a cold sweat when they
know they have to judge the F3A guys obviously because they are out of their
comfort zone.
The problem with our middle class ranks is very serious indeed and in my
opinion a very big concern with the future of this event in Australia. I
believe this is a result of the schedule changes we have just introduced for
the lower classes. We always get a bit of a set back when this happens but
we never really recovered from the schedule changes from 2 years ago.
Our local F3A class has one really top pilot and the other 5 or 6 pilots are
all very close in ability. We need a better approach to rank these guys from
first to last otherwise we might loose them too so hence the idea of letting
them decide who was first and last.
Until our sportsman get to that level we need to put our contingency plan
into play.
Regards,
Peter

Hi Jay,
Actually, the best judge I know didn't fly! Okay, he solo'ed, but didn't
have any more to do with flying himself. Great coach, though ...
My suggestion of tag-team judging was based on the assumption that Pete's
judge training problem was not going to be solved in a day.
In all fairness to some of the Sportspeople involved: remember that the vast
majority of Sportsmen will tell you that they are not comfortable judging
FAI.
I'm not into putting people into uncomfortable situations. The lack of
middle class comtestants is a major problem, and they need to be
cultivated.
There is a political economy lesson in here: without a middle class, a
nation is in deep trouble!
Pete and his local compatriots will solve the problem, but in the meanwhile,
they might need a plan "B".
Of course, anything described as tag-team must be completely honest and
above board!
Wrestling with the problem,
Dean

I see little correlation between an arthritic thumb and a sharp eye and
mind. With proper training and desire there is no reason why anyone could
not learn to be a good judge. The ability to see whats going on with the
airplane as a whole improves with judging time and experience, not stick
time. Someone who, for any number of reasons, no longer flys and has never
moved beyond Advanced could still remain involved in the sport and be well
qualified to judge FAI. This is true of many judging occupations. In fact
I would bet the majority of sport judges never reached the levels which they
are now judging.
