Sportsman Option B Question

Dowayne and all,

The reason for the repeated figures in Sportsman...IS we just don't have
enough turnarounds in Sportsman. And we are even quite limited on center
figures as well. Our goal is to teach skills not present figures that are
only survival. The 1/2 reverse Cuban and in the Sportsman Option A has the 1
roll repeated and the Immelman turn repeated. If you'll look at Sports B #15
you will find the 1/2 Cuban 8...So if we used it in #8 it would be repeated
also. We felt that the 1/2 reverse was better as it gave the pilot more time
to get ready for the upcoming figure. Not that the 1/2 Cuban is bad it just
tends to require more box management and we have that skill used also just
not repeated. So we wanted to use the best choice in the situation. The
goals were to increase Sportsman flight time and build skills...but we don't
have a ton of figures to throw at a sportsman pilot. SO repeating important
skills and building block figures was the choice. At first look it seems
like poor choices for repeats. The reality is the choices were made with
great care and we tried to give different looks when the figures were
repeated. In the 1 roll upwind vs downwind we felt that a upwind vs downwind
roll in windy conditions is very different. Since its rare that we fly it
true calm conditions it was decided that the upwind roll was good and so was
the traditional downwind roll. The next situation is a up high exit of the
box and then re-enter up high in the Option A...The idea in the this set of
figures was that the pilot would have the 2pt roll and a 1 roll both up
high. Less pucker factor and safer. The ideal turnaround would be a
procedure turn 90 deg out and 270 back..this would allow for major
correction to get back where you need to be. The original thought was to
have flat turns like 180's or even 360 as scored figures "aerobatic turns"
this idea was taken off the table as many felt they didn't build skills for
high classes. By the way the current rules on takeoff procedure allow for a
procedure turn as one of the two require options so we felt this would be a
good place to practice it without being in a scored environment.

On another note the 1/2 reverse Cuban 8 is probably the easiest figure for a
sportsman pilot to do as a turn around. Its very safe and teaches good
skills. The result is building blocks and repetition. Pattern and Precision
Aerobatics is the art of mastery and perfection of the figures...not just
can you do them.

This entire list of schedules was based on this philosophy more than any
other. Mastery and perfection of the figures. Once you have perfected the
figure in a given class you have the skills in both flying and
trimming(model setup) to move onto the next class. There has been some flack
about the Advanced proposals being too light and lack of inverted exits. The
reality is the Advanced schedules that are proposed are close in KF to the
current schedule. The proposals are 48 and 49 KF and the current is 50. So
yes in terms of simple KF its a little easier. But not by much. Also the
figures in the current advanced are very close in skill building to the
proposals. Triangle loop with a full roll on top combines the current
Triangle and the Double with the inverted roll. The difference is the
inverted roll is at the top of the box and not at the bottom. A figure M in
any schedule is a tough figure...Even in an FAI or Masters sequence. The
Figure M is probably the most difficult maneuver to score well on because of
the elements and the opportunity to zero it by rolling the wrong way or
flopping a stall turn. As for other figures I think the proposals for
Advanced are on a equal footing with the current schedule..Slow roll, 4pt,
top hat w 1/2's, avalanche, triangle, 45 down snap (its just upright not
inverted...by the way the 1 snap is often more difficult than a 1.5snap, and
the 1 snap is in the current Masters), square loop, humpty options, spin,
stall turns, bunts, 1/4roll elements and so on.....

One thing I really think speaks volumes for the proposed advanced options is
that you are not repeating similar elements all at once. In the current you
do a bunt, double I, Immelman as a 3 figure set. We tried to break up the
look so the figures didn't blend together and have repetition of elements
back to back all the time.

I hope I answered the questions you guys have.

Troy

Subject: Sportsman Option B Question

Is maneuver #8 ½ Reverse Cuban 8 correct? There is already a ½ Reverse Cuban
as maneuver #5. It seems that Maneuver #8 should be a ½ Cuban 8 that follows
the 2/2pt roll.
