Eric,
Responding to the "..last minute.." comment: I am an industrial material
handling (conveyor) contractor (and distributor) and going into July
Downtime in automotive plants is where we crack our biggest nuts. We
generally are doing pull-ahead work on weekends--24hrs/day during June and
BTTW in our shop. The plant(s) go down the Friday b/4 the 4th for two weeks
and it's 24/7 then. If we are fortunate, we end up with the 'Start-up'
contract--all the little projects that help the line run more efficiently
and that has a smaller crew a couple shifts for a few months.
Unfortunately, since I bought this joint in '92, it cost me almost all my
summer flying time and made it impossible to even think about the Nats.(or
Pattern) for about ten years. I was hoping to go this year--but there is so
much up in the air--it just doesn't look likely.
I'm sure there are a bunch of guys in similar--but different--circumstances.
Sometimes you just don't know until the last minute. And as big a pain in
the rear as it would be, I think there should be a way for a guy to just
show up and fly. Happens all the time at local contests. This is a
hobby--and generally hobbies have to take a back seat to most everything
else and get shoe-horned in sometimes....at the 'last minute'. Just my
opinion.
Richard
