best method for cleaning crud from an engine?

I have tried the boiling anti-freeze and can attest the it works really well, that is on varnish and other deposites.  Can't say for sure if it will work on carbon deposites but if it doesn't you can resort back to the scrape and polish method. Be careful.

  I doubt that anything is going to "dissolve" carbon. It will have to be scrapped and polished off. As for other deposits, some of my flying friends swear by putting the parts in a warm crock pot of antifreeze. I haven't tried it myself.
