best method for cleaning crud from an engine?

I doubt that anything is going to "dissolve" carbon. It will have to be
scrapped and polished off. As for other deposits, some of my flying friends
swear by putting the parts in a warm crock pot of antifreeze. I haven't
tried it myself.
