You're not going to believe it, but we used dry cell batteries!  
Remember, these were/are not rechargeable, so we had to buy new ones 
when they ran down.  When I started, I had a single tube receiver with 
3 volt filament supply and 45 volt plate supply.  The transmitter had a 
six volt filament supply and 135 volt plate supply.  I'll bet you're 
sorry you asked now.
