In Nebraska for the last four or five years, we have been
holding pattern contests using the SPA maneuvers but
without the aircraft restrictions or age categories. Last year
we had four one-day contests in the state. Initially we
awarded bonus points for aircraft that conformed to SPA
standards. Now it has become an open contest for any
pattern type aircraft.

The bad side of not conforming to SPA standards is the
gradual creep towards larger, more
sophisticated pattern aircraft. On the other hand the larger
IMAC type aircraft don't seem to have an advantage with
doing SPA maneuvers.

Some of us find these contests are more pleasurable than
traditional AMA pattern. But regardless of preference,
these contests have renewed interest in all type of pattern in
the area. The reestablishment of the Lincoln AMA pattern
is the result of the modified SPA contests.

There is talk of modifying pattern classes for something
more enticing. It is not needed. Simply sanction a Class C
contest and use the SPA maneuvers. It is fun and it may
encourage more traditional pattern participation.
