Steve, chemical batteries always have the same number of electrons in 
them.  You can only transfer the electrons.  Someone who remembers their 
first year chemistry class could add the details on the chemistry at 
work, but a simple consequence that reminds us of this is the second 
wire/terminal on every battery.  If electrons only flowed out or in 
batteries would only need one terminal.
