Jim,
    Cutting the top of the vertical fin at the  split line is of no 
consequence at all.  The tailpost gives it all the  strength it needs, and you can put 
a little epoxy on the underside of the split  before you slip in the tail post 
to seal it off and give it more strength if you  are concerned about that.
