Dean,
  If the engine speeds up at idle and you cannot stop the engine by closing the throttle barrel completely, then you most definitely have an air leak.  Check all of the backplate screws for tightness, and also look at the valve cover gasket real close.  I has this same situation about a month ago with a 1.40 Sport.  Valve gasket was sucked in along one side, hard to see. Straightened it out and problems went away, Larry....
