Tinting Canopy

I was wondering what would be the best way to tint a plastic canopy 
(Temptation Canopy), black or smoke color.  I have used Rit dye in the 
past but noticed when I left the canopy in too long the color looked 
more purple than black.  In addition, it seemed to only work when the 
dye was heated which caused the plastic to deform slightly. Any 
suggestions?
