Retracts V Fixed Gear

Gentlemen,
About the time I had no time for pattern, the rules changed to the larger
equipment. Along with that came many designs with fixed gear. I've
actually had very good success with retracts previously and still like
them--have been flying fixed for a little while and while OK; I still think
I like retracts better. To me, the lines look better, cleaner and the
airplanes are easier to transport. It seems that converting some of the old
designs to fixed had the advantage of adding area that when slowed down some
it was a little easier to do the maneuvers--but on the current wide and
taller fuse designs, the fixed gear may not be as desirable or needed.
Since I've been out of it so long, I haven't really heard the pros and cons
and would appreciate your feedback. I do have some philosophical issues
that pattern is pattern and the scale-like guys do their thing with
fixed--There IS a difference--but that's probably a discussion for another
time...
Thanks,
Richard
