RE: HOWEric,
Send me a Central Hobbies Li-Ion charger and I'll set it up for 12.6 volts.

With Nicads you can leave them on trickle @ 10-15 mA depending upon capacity. Done this for years - Load-test before flying.( I don't use Nicads any more.)
With NiMH's I have been doing the "trickle" with some. With other packs I have been medium charging while going to the field. Nearly three years of this has shown no difference. When I say medium charging I am using the new Hobbico Quick Field Charger Mark-II. It lets you set the charge rate on its two output channels. I use 200-300 mA on my 30 minute drive and it fully charges both the TX and the RX packs before I get there, without heating up the packs. The 1830 mAh NiMH packs that I use in TX's and RX's, have no memory problems and hold their charge pretty well. (They are lighter than my Nicad packs)
With my Li-ions I have found that they hold their charge for a long time and they won't take a boost until I have flown a flight (I am talking three month periods here).
I recently tested some Li-ion TX packs. Held most of its charge for a year when unused - dropped 0.8v Began at 14.1v. I could fly three pattern days with one TX charge. Put one in a JR PCM 856 car radio and ran 4 cars, basically all day. Looking for a suitable field charger. Uses two packs of three Li-ions in parallel and is nice and light. The RX packs are lighter than the 4 -cell Nicad or NiMH packs. About 3,4 oz if I recall.
Regards,
Eric.
