I have mine mounted on a double-niCad 6 cell pack. 1800mah cells, drives about 14 volts. Will turn over my REALLY high compression Mintor 1.70 with ease. Easy to recharge, very portable.
BUT - throw away the stock cone, and buy the Sullivan pink (or blue, I can't remember)....the stock one hardens up, slips, scars spinners....not good.

The about the only parts that wear out are the brushes. You can tell when you have to push the switch in all the way to get it to turn. The switch is actually a spring loaded cam that lets the brush come into contact with the commutator. Mine lasted 4 seasons before the brushes needed replacing. The gears don't seem to wear much.
I love the starter. Can't beat them for power and light weight.

User of the Kavan 12v Starter from Central. How are the gears holding up? Are you happy with the starter?
