The ties don't touch the plane. You pull them tight enough so that they
sink 
into the foam insulation.Just make sure the tie connection is underneath
the 
pvc away from the plane. I have done this for years. When the insulation 
gets fuel soaked or dirty they are easy to replace. You can build the stand

with vertical posts that hold the plane upright. Use the insulation method 
here also.
My stands have a center bar under the center of the fuse.To facilitate 
turning the plane over in the stand.You can use heat on the center piece of

pvc and form it so the canopy will clear when the plane is upside down in 
the stand. I use the stands for transport. assembly, and maintenance. Each 
plane  has it's own stand.For about $5.00 each,not bad for stands.

Jim,

I don't know if we built from the same edition of the book. The versions I
built were all wood. My problem was finding some means of sticking the
padding to the wood that would hold.
