Keith,
A fixed gear would not help for flying in turbulence. Chopping several inches off each wingtip will. On your next wing use a higher taper ratio and less span. Both of these approaches will move the centers of lift inboard. Every time I have cutoff a wing, 10 to 15%, I have liked the flying qualities better. I cut one wing three times. Nat
