No need to feel stupid.  I used to build engines for competition, in 
full-size Drag Boats, primarily, but I did some for cars, also..  It was 
said at the time, "there hasn't been an engine builder yet, who hasn't 
been fooled at some time or other, by having linkage that won't let the 
butterflies open all the way."
Of course, it's never happened to me!  Heh, Heh.
