Jon,
I think I need to make a very bold statement here as I'm a great testimonial that a 2-Meter Plane doesn't win the contest.
I started with the Aresti and entered a total of seven contest my 1st year out this year. Although a 2-Meter pattern plane seems to some as being -intimidating-, it certainly didn't intimidate most that I flew against across the Central US from St Louis to Detroit to Nashville and Cincinnati.
My progress wasn't with the plane it was attending contest and getting feedback. I will also tell you in the 3 Districts I competed in, not one round was won or lost because I was flying a Focus. As a matter of fact, I only won 1 contest and placed 2nd or 3rd to folks flying and Extra or a Kaos. Ron Freeman was very competitive with his Kaos.
When I started working with Mark Atwood at my first contest I actually flew in, I think he said it best when I asked him if a 2M ship would help me...His response, "No"...He was right! I had the same problems with the Focus that I had with the Aresti. The only other factor was was nerves in that if I pile drive the plane I was out $1,500 Vs $400 for the Aresti. That didn't help me either.
The only thing the Focused helped with is that it handled a 20+mph wind better than the Aresti did. My progress was slow, but steady.
The only reason I bought the Focus was to have less of an investment in a plane before I built the Temptation and I had already committed $$$ for the future seasons.
I don't think any sportsman I flew against was very intimidated by me flying a Focus. If they were, they certainly weren't after the 1st round...lol
The bottom line is, "Either you want to fly Pattern or you don't!" Everything else is an excuse to pin it on...No different for IMAC...Same-O-Same-O...

I guess I wasn't aware of that, but now that I think about it, one guy was flying an Extra at one of the contest.
I guess I just assumed it would take a full blown 2 meter job to be competitive.
Not sure what it is going to take, but I hope someone figures it out before pattern dies out.
