We at aeroslave.com are going through our first ever actual insurance claim with USPS. There was a big ole footprint on the box where it was crushed (along with the fuse inside). The customer accepted the package, took it home, opened it and sent me pictures. The USPS let me start the insurance claim process but I had to mail the forms to the customer to fill out part of the form and for submission at his post office. So far so good, but there hasn't been insurance payment yet.
With the USPS there is no way for me to do "everything" to take the load off the customer. When they damage a package the mfg and customer are stuck in it together for a while.
