Actually the 4000 Super Servos were debuted in the Hobby Dynamics
booth at the 1994 Toledo Show (I recall Dean Koger showing them to
me). The JR Super Servos were among the first digital servos
available (there seems to be an erroneous perception that digital
servos weren't introduced until around 98 or 99 when Futaba finally
introduced digital servos).

Also, they work fine with non-JR radio equipment. Just look inside a
non-sponsored non-JR controlled airplane. Odds are better than 50-50
you'll see one or more JR digitals inside.
