PVA is poly vinyl alcohol, a water soluble mold release material that can be
sprayed onto a plug or mold after waxing to ensure release. (The wax must be
silicone free for the PVA to flow out well.) There are several suppliers of
these materials for modeling. (Aerospace Composites, CST, Fiberglast, etc.).
To lay up the mold I apply a liberal coat of resin to the plug and allow it
to begin to cure (a viscous gel coat). Add several layers of 3/4 oz cloth
(conforms to curves well and minimizes pin holes). Brushing on liberal
amounts of resin as you proceed, lay on several layers of 3 oz cloth,
several 5 oz, (use low cost E-glass for all) and finish with strips of
fiberglass mat to provide rigidity. Let cure 48 hrs. and pull the plug.
