Georgie,

Any roll starts and ends with a rolling element. 

The 2 of 4 starts the instant the first 1/4 roll is started and ends the 
instant the second 1/4 roll ends. 

Split the distance between those two events and you have the middle of the 
knife edge, however short or long it may be.
