Winter projects

Instant gratification is nice, helps the hobby, promotes exposure. The kids
are good on the computer and typically most that I have experienced do well
on the sticks and progress quickly with whatever trainer we are flying
(Alpha, Kadet, etc) . Its a different world....airplanes, models and
flying have always been an addiction to me....I wouldn't give up my 30
second successes at age 12 with my scratch built Javalaero (Ted Strader),
Cox .020, Ace pulse commander (rudder only) experience. Not to mention the
tens of hundreds of Sleek Streaks, Comet kits, and control line before the
R/C stuff....

This is a great hobby, I'm grateful for every facet of experience I've had
in it! (Even the heliboy I bought used in 1978 for 50bucks with no help and
no instructions, but a desire to try helicopters. A worn out HP40, and the
elation felt with a successful 3-4 second hover.....from my hula hoop
landing gear... no gyros, no mixing [Kraft KP5C])

I still love the smell of Ambroid, Sigment, and Aero Gloss, and most of all,
burning castor oil.
Gosh, am I getting old at 44......:)

Kids today really do not need an ultra stable plane. They usually
video-joy-stick-literate. They do, however, need pretty instant
gratification. I have experience with half a dozen Hanger-9 Alpha trainers
that come just about ready to go. They work well and you can get the parts
that will be needed. The engine needle is goof-proof and is ready to go.

All trainers are, IMHO, harder to land than a sport plane. they float and
bounce and frequently embarrass so called pattern pilot. I would not,
however sacrifice the wing characteristics of a trainer. If the kid gets
good, get him a more versatile plane.

Nat:

The new Nexstar ARF trainer package is very nice! It is complete with the
Futaba FM 4-channel radio already installed, the OS 46FX, AFS (Automatics
Flight Stabilization electronics), and a special version of the RealFlight
Simulator. This package goes for about $389.00.

It is getting late in the game, but regardless, I need to buy a present for
a 7 year old. Who makes the best quality ARF trainer ?

It looks like XMAS is coming early to my workshop.

I have been told that a FOCUS-2 is on its way, no sleigh needed!

I can't remember if I mentioned it but at the BARKs end of season contest
they had a drawing, courtesy of Piedmont models, of a FOCUS-2. All the
entrants have their name put into a hat and of all the people to win a
FOCUS-2, luckily, it was me! Now I get one that will arrive about XMAS time.
(Look for a review ASAP and flying as soon as there is daylight above 45F in
South Jersey.)

For those of you waiting to order one I would suggest that you move quickly
as I hear that quite a few have already been earmarked for shipping to those
who pre-ordered. The Piedmont guys have flown the prototypes and are openly
excited about the flight performance and power to weight ratio.

What I like about the 2 is that they went to a top loader with and
optionally removable pipe tunnel. I have relatively big hands and a top
loader allows me to keep the skin on the back of my hands.

Just as much fun was the delivery today of a Desert Aircraft DA50 for my
Double Vision ARF. I was very impressed with the quality of workmanship. I
was surprised to feel how light a 50cc motor was in my hands. It has a rear
carb and in this case a nice big Slimline smoke muffler.

No I won't be putting the DA 50 into the FOCUS-2, but it won't be long
before we see viable gas engines on the front of our 2M models A 50cc motor
that weighs 48 oz starts to get very close to our needs. A 23 x 12 prop also
gets very interesting - just fantasizing - it's healthy you know!

What are you all expecting or already have in your possession to cure your
winter blues.

Regards

Eric.
