car batteries

Sounds to me like he has a bad battery. A good battery usually will not fry an alternator but a bad one can. In our area the hot weather is culprit to battery failures, It causes them to swell, sulfate and sometimes short out internally causing undue load on the alternator if you can get them started or sometimes even causing a battery explosion. Lack of fluids in a battery is also a main cause of failure or lack of charging ability even thought they claim to be maintenance FREE...yahhhh!! Don't be fooled by a 60 mo warranty. We see on a regular basis battery failures in around 2.0 to 3.5 yrs old and 85% of them seem to happen during the peak heat days of summer. I charge my kids race car off the battery 3-4 times a session and the only time I had problems was when the battery was getting weak.

I can't imagine burning out a perfectly good alternator that is rated for 100 amps by just charging a battery. I've done it so many times. Yet, I suppose if there was something else going on, it sure could happen. I mean, this mechanic said he's seen it. It's just hard to imagine--my alternators put out ~14.7 volts x 100 amps. = 1,470 watts. Lots of current. Last time I looked, that's more than a large TV uses, or even a 2 slice toaster. I'd like to know what the DC current draw is on Jason's chargers.)
  Oh, Well.
