Thanx Wayne.
The 28th Annual High Plains Championship is in the book.
On Fri, something unusual happened. By 1:00 pilots were showing up to
practice and get used to the wide open space we have(not unusual) but about
12 pilots from 4 states showed up and practiced till about 7:00 whence we
headed for a common meeting spot to chastise and cajol each other some more.
This was GREAT FuN as most contest I've attended this was a little
different.
Sat morning started right on time with our friendly upper level winds
creating quite a challenge for all. One folded wing and one instance of
ail. fluttler later, 4 rounds were completed prior to 3:00 with 19
registered pilots. Judging duties were shared by all. Much to his credit,
Jim Scofield had his plane go in during the first round, but he stayed and
helped to judge the entire contest. Thanx Jim.
Julie and John Johnson hosted a free texas spaghetti gathering at their
house that was enjoyed, I believe, by all. Vonnie Brozo cranked hard to get
3 different types of home made Ice Cream. Yummy
Sun started with 3 planes already in the air when I arrived at 7:20.
Intermediate and Advanced were a close race and who ever flew the best on
Sun would win. The other 3 classes had already been decided. The upper
level winds again were extremely decieving on the ground, and tested
everyone.
When it was said and done, Plaques were handed out to the top 3 places.
Every contestant will also receive a mini-plaquard with their name engraved
and the High Plains emblem. Sadly this couldn't be done on the weekend so
will be mailed to the pilots. All out of towners were heading to their
highway before 12 noon, with the Lubbock contingent putting a few things
away and done by 12:30. All 6 rounds were flown except where opted not
too(Intermediate opted not to fly the 6 round.)
Lance Van Nostrand represented the NSRCA for District 6, providing District
of the Year T-shirts to the winners.
Want to thank all who came and hope everyone will bring a friend next year.
Don Ramsey and Jeff Carrish battled it out for longest drive(long way for
both) Also want to thank the WINGS miniature aircraft society for allowing
us to host this event. And thank you to my daughter Kaci who helped with
Sat morn registration and Joe Brozo for Fri Preregistration(made Sat morning
so much easier)
As far as CDing and flying. If I had had a mechanical or plane difficulty I
would have set it aside. As it was, all went well mechanically. Even
remembered to fuel up each time!! The secret for me was the participating
pilots. Not a single pilot grinched at setting in the judges chair. I
tried to spread the "duties" around fairly. Some even offered to help more.
This is the attitude that makes contests work, and it was greatly
appreciated.
Hope to see everyone in N Dallas.
