OS Twin plug head

Hi all,

Regarding the Mintor 3M dual plug head and engine. I invested in both a
little time ago, and I'm very impressed by the quality of manufacture. I
haven't run any of them yet, but I have no doubt that they are both keepers!

Have a look at my good Norwegian friend Ola Fremmings web-site for
information about both. He also has an article from the recent EC2002.

http://home.online.no/~ofremmi/

I was once again impressed by how Ola's OS-140RX with the 3M head performed.
Running an APC 17x13, Greve pipe and 15% nitro the engine never missed a
beat during the entire competition and was hardly audible when in the air.
Which was more than could be said about the Dingo's of the competition!
There is no doubt that the Dingo is a powerful engine but it's clearly much
more noisy than the 2-strokes. Considering - according to some sources -
that the Dingo needs 30% nitro to run right it's also a lot more expensive
to run than the 2-strokes which are happy down to 10% nitro - in my
experience. I guess you don't care much about this in the US since the nitro
isn't nearly as expensive as in Europe!

Having said that I bought a Dingo at the competition to try out. Will have
to see how it goes on 20% nitro fuel... I asked CPLR at the competition and
he ran 23% nitro fuel with an APC 15,5x12W prop. I remember his Synergy as
reasonably quiet, maybe because he flies in such a controlled manner. Also I
believe his Synergy to be less than 4400 grams, so he probably didn't use
full throttle that often ;-)

To be honest you don't really notice the engine when CPLR flies you just
stand there amazed and watch as he guides the plane through the schedule in
total harmony! Two words come to mind: Smoothness and Gracefulness. It was
funny watching his first round flight of the EC2002. He was the last pilot
to fly on the first day of competition, and as soon as he was airborne there
was complete silence among all spectators and fellow pilots, everybody just
watched his flight in silence.

Best regards,
Morten Laugesen

The reply from Mintor manufacture regarding my interest in fitting a dual
plug head to an OS140 rx:
Maybe Tony at Radio South or someone else can check on getting these in a
bulk shipment and reselling.
Might interfere with their relationship with OS though. Dont know, but maybe
possible.
.
I have not done the dollar conversion for this today, but I expect it will
be worth the money if you are having difficulty with an OS, or simply want a
lower RPM available to you.

Thought a few of you might want to see this so here it is

I have three of the 3 mintors head on my YS 140 RX, it does lower the idle
and make them smoother, the link is http://www.mintor3m.it/Index.htm just
send him an e-mail.

There is actually two Japanese dual plug that I know of none from OS to my
knowledge, the link is www.hobbynet.com I used a translator available on
the web (free) Bellwood is the company producing them they seem to do high
end product out of aluminium and carbon fiber, the head number are 150142
for the green one and the is one larger non anodized number 150141, for the
green one there is also the option for a additional piece (call sub head
sink)that can be bolted in the center. green 13000 yen (with sub) and the
other one is 9800 yen......I don't have either of these two.

Mike,
How does one purchase either of these heads?

Hi all,

The green Japanese twin plug head is a bolt on option that even has another
heat sink piece. Didn't have too much luck with the extra piece, the engine
was hard to warm up and would sometimes die before take off. Removing the
second piece solved that. The idle was incredibly low at around 1300, and
transition was the smoothest of any OS I have seen yet. This particular
engine also used an exhaust valve on the stinger, and in conjunction with
the head, made for the smoothest OS I have seen to date.

it's worth noting that the green japanese head is bigger, and is hell on
chin cowls with hyde mounts =P

The 3M purple head from Italy is also supposedly the same bolt pattern as
the OS, although I haven't had any personal experience with these. If it
works the same as the green one from Japan, this could be a good investment.

I understand the 3M Mintor engine it was made for is a real work of art,
and I may try to obtain one of these myself soon.
