I purchased a multi-nation travel adapter from Radio Shack back
in 1998 for something like $24. I'm not confident that it
solves the 50/60 cycle problem. It has prongs for Europe,
the Middle East, England, Africa, Australia and the Philippines.
It is rated for 50 watts, but says that it is not for continuous
use.
I had an IBM laptop that had a switch of some kind on the bottom
that let you go from North American to European current. I thought
that was really slick. But I didn't have a cord for it, so I
just plugged it into my adaptor. It worked OK in England and
France.
