Hmmm, I thought all of our events were sanctioned. The Boise ones have been.

Jim,

I like your note about adding contests to the page of AMA sanctioned events - it only cost a club $25 fee to register a sanctioned event.
This kind of sending them our heartbeat might
be adopted not only in D8 but in NSRCA too.

Hi Art, I don't believe I've replied to this and I've read the other posts.
Thanks art for your service and I'm looking forward to John's.

I've flown competition for so long that I barely remember how I got into it but two things stand out.
Local help and encouragement to fly scale like and with precision, friendship with local USPJA judges and competitors in my club.
This close contact with involved individuals built lasting friendships and we began traveling to contests together, more for the association then the competition, basically a weekend out of town away from the kids with the wife and friends. Attending contests have added new friends whos company I enjoy and I'll continue to compete as long as I'm able.

Over the years I've competed in Sport Aerobatics (IMAC) Precision Aerobatics (Pattern) and Scale. IMAC has in my opinion evolved into a big airplane air show but I still compete in scale and pattern.

As for adding contests at new locations with the hope of attracting new competitors, we've tried that with little success finding that a handful of regulars were just committing more 'weekends out' consuming time and resources. Its highly unlikely that additional contests alone will encourage participation. Even experienced fliers find it hard to fly with precision and many don't want to be 'subjectively' judged by someone else.

In my opinion pattern fliers evolve through friendship and association not availability of contests, those with an interest will come to one of our contests to see what its about which brings me to another point.

Model Aviation, the AMA magazine. I don't know if anybody reads it but the listing of sanctioned contests section in the back of the magazine has mostly been absent of our contest information. How can we attract people if they don't know where or when we fly? These are AMA contests and they should be sanctioned, with that said it would still be highly unlikely that a new competitor would travel a considerable distance to see what it's about.

I consider Richland in my back yard at 150 mi., everything else is 400 - 600 miles and we haven't had a contest in Billings in decades, that's about 1000 mi. from Portland. Distance is not an issue for me but my spring flying is hit and miss due to weather and I'm not likely to participate sooner then about June, other than in my back yard.

I believe I've said all I can on these issues. When the schedule is finalized I'll add it to my calendar and try to support them.

Jim

Fellow D-8 pilots,

A gentle nudge, NSRCA membership payments for 2021 are now due. You can go to NSRCA web site to complete.

Moving on to 2021… We’ve called to the judges “next maneuver is landing” for the last time and 2020 is quickly becoming a vague image in the rear view mirror. As a statement of Aresti maneuvers we might describe the year as having too many Unknowns. It is time to focus on 2021 with more Knowns.

As you all know John Bentley will be stepping into the D-8 DVP shoes for the 2021. John, Sean Mersh and I have had a number of discussions about steps we could take to make next year’s contests more accessible while reducing the amount of travel required over the course of the summer. In preparing a tentative schedule we agreed that the District Championship should be more centrally located to accommodate our pilots. We hope to schedule contests so that there will be at least a two week interval between events. We propose offering new locations for contests and slightly increasing the number of contests. Within this framework we propose that in selecting District Champions the scoring will be based on the five best scores achieved over the season. Hopefully this will permit pilots to set their contest itineraries for more convenient travel. Of course, this does restrict pilots from going to all events if they choose.

In reviewing the attached schedule I’d like to draw your attention to several elements:

  * The Medford contest is set as the first contest of the season. It is intended that the contest will continue the D-7/D-8 shootout we’ve enjoyed for many years.
  * The AMA club in Eugene is an attractive site for a new event. Rick Bergeron is facilitating discussions with the club president and we hope to be able to confirm this soon.
  * The proposed date for the Eugene contest falls on Mother’s Day weekend. This may not be attractive for some pilots so, we suggest as an alternative the weekend of May 1-2. The downside to this alternative is the one week spacing between Medford and Eugene.
  * As you all know D-8 reaches to the east and we would like to see more pattern pilots joining us from these areas. We propose reintroducing the Boise contest. With promotion we should be able to draw participation from both Idaho and Utah. John Bentley has offered to be CD of Boise.
  * The District Championship is always the last contest of the season. In 2021 we propose the event be held in Redmond.

None of this is in “cement”. The next step is for all D-8 pilots to review and chime in. We all know that scheduling these events is a jigsaw puzzle, especially integrating with individual clubs. So we need to finalize soon. If you have thoughts please respond by November 18.

Time to winterize your batteries,

Art
