[NSRCA-dist8] June update

Well, here we are, early June. The only patterns above are found in the
clouds. We have three contests remaining on the year’s calendar. To
determine the current appetite for joining these contests I sent out an
invitation to D-8 pilots asking all who were prepared to fly in these
contests to “reregister” on the NSRCA website.

This morning our CDs gathered for a Zoom meeting to look at next steps. As
you likely have seen on the website each of the three contests received six
registrations (two FAI and 4 Advanced). Note that all who registered have
RV’s or 5th wheels, or typically overnight at fields. We all recognized
that pilots who would have to stay in motels are not likely to attend.

Rex Lesher reported that prospects for Redmond are tenuous. The county
continues to impose rigid restrictions that impact activities at the club’s
field. Bill Bowen has advised that with six pilots it is unlikely that the
club would be willing to close off flying for their members. Medford’s
field is now operating but with restrictions.

In a nutshell, conditions in D-8 are fluid as is the case throughout the
U.S. We agreed that we need to continue to monitor all the conditions
surrounding each of our contests and be prepared to move quickly when we
can. Redmond is first. If conditions improve we will proceed to a contest
and will target getting an alert out with at least two weeks notice. Pilots
will need to be prepared to move quickly. With the small number of pilots
everyone will be flying or sitting in a judge’s chair. It is likely that
some will be judging pilots in their own class. (An option is that all
would fly the Advanced sequence.)

These are lousy times. Each of us is eager to get back to flying and each
of us is eager to remain healthy. In this morning’s conversation we were
all wrestling with trying to find the best direction. These decisions can’t
be made in a vacuum. They involve all D-8 pilots and we would welcome your
input on solutions.

Stay healthy and safe,

Art
