[NSRCA-dist8] D8 VP Position

Jump right in Tim. I had flown pattern about a year when I volunteered.
The view from the bottom is much more interesting and gives us seasoned
pattern fliers insight as to the kind of assistance needed. The answers are
easy, it's the questions that are hard and some of us more seasoned fliers
don't remember that far back.

Thanks for your kind words. If someone more qualified doesn't come forth
by the end of the year, then I will seriously consider the opportunity.

Tim,

Here are my thoughts on your points:

1.) I don't see this as an issue, you can do a better job connecting with
new pattern pilots than the experienced guys can, the future is the new
pilots and you are in a better position to attract them. You can always get
experienced guys to review your technical contributions or write input for
your articles. The other thing to remember is a lot of guys talk like they
know all the technical details but many are faking it! Same thing happens at
work every day.
2.) Everyone starts at the bottom and advances, your a good pilot and have
advanced a lot sense you started flying pattern.
3.) You will learn the judging details and a lot of judging is just paying
attention, I think the number one issue is keep your yes on the airplane, I
have gotten away with a lot over the years!
4.) This is a problem, others will help. I will for sure but you are right,
it requires some time.

I truly don't see you as being any less qualified than anyone else, besides
you need to write an article about your family operation, its pretty cool to
see dad and the boys at the contests!

Jump in, we will help you!

I have several concerns about accepting the responsibility of this position,
but support from D8 pilots is certainly not one of them. Never met a
nicer bunch of people. I'm worried about the following:
1) my very limited knowledge about the tech side of the hobby (electricity
is my achilles heel; absolutely brain dead about this type of power).
2) my extremely limited flying skills (the stats speak for themselves. I'm
the worst pilot in D8).
3) do not know much about the judging side of things
4) time commitment (cannot make it to all the meets)

Understand that I can get help for some of these, but still these are fairly
significant concerns. I've always admired the knowledge that Gordon and Rex
had on a myriad of subjects. About all I can do if someone has a question
is get them in contact with a more experienced pilot. It would seem to me
that one of the more seasoned and knowledgeable pilots would be a more
appropriate choice for district VP.

>From writing for Model Aviation I can say what Rex said "I think it would
be good to have someone that's not in Masters or FAI in the position." is
very true. Many, dare I say, senior pattern pilots have told me the same
thing. The group I speak of understands talking about really expensive
equipment or their - well thought out - opinions does nothing to attract new
people. I am finding Pattern just needs to be it's own thing. We need to let
other SIG's do their thing and just concentrate on making pattern a
enjoyable activity, the rest will take care of itself in time.

I could of never pulled off a Boise contest without the help and support of
the D8 contingent. Nobody has ever said No to me when I asked for help. We
are truly blessed to fly in the district we fly in.
