So… I have an issue with the idea that seeing a disarming plug missing is the same as being able to see that the plane is disarmed. We have 2 planes are our field, both of which have arming plug ports, neither of which are wired up. Used planes, left the
plug in the side of the fuse so as not to have a hole in the side, but it’s JUST the plug. No wiring. Neither guy uses (or has) the plugs, they both just connect the batteries under the canopy (as do I currently).
<div class=""><br class="">
</div>
<div class="">As has been stated, we require armed planes to be restrained if they’re not actively on the runway. Just as turning off your radio with the failsafe on doesn’t disarm the plane, neither does seeing an open port in the side of the fuse. You
can either SEE that the batteries are not attached, or not. That pretty much requires the canopy be left off. </div>
<div class=""><br class="">
</div>
<div class="">On a windy day, most of us keep batteries IN the plane for weight, and Canopies on to prevent them blowing away. I for one cannot scan down the flight line at a contest with 30 pattern planes strewn about and notice if one has an arming plug
in or out. I’m betting none of us can. </div>
<div class=""><br class="">
</div>
<div class="">I totally get the intent. I just don’t see it in practice. We MUST learn good procedures. That’s the only thing that’s going to work. My $0.02</div>

<div class="">At my club we have a rule that all planes (regardless of power system) have to be either restrained or visibility deactivated. This allows me different options depending on the plane, normally I just leave the canopy under the wing on my pattern
plane, some planes I use a tail hook or strap to restrain them, on the smaller ones that have the battery enclosed I can throw a rag over the prop, all meeting the rule. We do not specify a disarming plug or how you meet the rule, you just have to have the
aircraft restrained or visibly disarmed, leaving it up to the individual how they go about meeting the requirement.<br class="">
<br class="">
We did have to define visibly disarmed as being able to see that it was not armed without moving the plane, but so far have not had to specify a distance you have to be to see that it is disarmed, just having the rule in place gets most thinking on how they
are complying with it and each set up their own system to meet it. <br class="">

That would work, especially for those familiar with 1:1 scale aircraft, but I think unnecessary. However, just the absence of an arming plug would show it is inactive, I would think.<br class="">

What about a simple dummy plug with a remove before flight flag on to insert in the place of the arming plug? A very simple and visual way to show that it is disarmed<br class="">
