Thanks! I fully expect this sort of thing to be preference based, but I do love the idea of just clicking a clicker for downgrades and another button to click when the maneuver is complete so I'll definitely implement something like that.<div>
<br></div><div>I *don't* think this would be mandatory by any means, but I think it could be a huge time saver, and I'm also envisioning some cloud-based capabilities for contestants to analyze their performance over time, particularly when they can compare the same maneuver in front of the same set of judges over time. </div>
<div><br></div><div>I thought about doing it all over wifi to the CD/scorekeeper's system and that's still an option, but implementation becomes WAY easier if I can just stand up a service on amazon web services rather than making the CD's system be the host where I also need to solve persistence, etc. But, I am very sensitive to the possibility of stuff being broken and that's why I'd already opened the conversation with Gene for making this a mechanism that <i>works with</i> PACSS rather than a <i>replacement</i> for PACSS.</div>

I think Mark has a much better answer for the data entry if you go
forward with this. Single clicking of the downgrades would work much
better. Number entry will inevitably result in a fairly high level
of incorrect data plus forgetting to push enter in either system
will cause problems that are unfixable without a bunch of NOs by the
judge.<br>
<br>
Right now this would appear to be a solution without a problem.
Either manual entry on paper or direct entry through your phone or
other device will work just fine until you have a problem. Then it
is much easier to take the score sheet back to the judge for a
correction then it is to take a printout that has scores offset
because a maneuver is missing. You don't think you can get away with
having the scoring done automatically without realtime result
checking by a person at the scoring computer? As long as you have to
have a person there anyway...<span><font color="#888888"><br>

<blockquote type="cite">Actually, I think a better approach if you were going
to try this would be to use the side buttons and simply click 1/2
pt downgrades and enter. So you'd truly NEVER have to look away
from the plane. 1/2 pt granularity would require you to wait
until you saw a full half point of infraction before clicking but
it would be pretty easy to click off points here and there as you
went along. It would also align better with our judging guidlines
to truly be judging downgrades, rather than assigning a final
score to each manuever.

I've been thinking of just this system for a
couple years now. If you were using a smart phone,
you could hold it up near your line of sight during
the flight and tap in your score without taking your
eyes off the plane. Perhaps even a graphic of the
maneuver for quick reference?<br clear="all">

[NSRCA-discussion] Quick question re:
cellular data service at the fields
where you compete<br>
</div>
</font>
<div>
<div><br>
<div>I've been thinking about a
"better way" to get scores into a
system like PACSS, given the general
ubiquity of smart phones and the
overall tech savvy among the pattern
crowd, I believe it should be
possible for a judge or scribe to
very quickly enter scores for each
maneuver into an iOS or Android
phone or tablet communicating via
the cellular data network (typical
data is so small as to be VERY
lightweight on data usage, so even
Edge data services would be quick
enough to record scores) the
interface would be designed for very
fast entry of a score (two taps per
maneuver scored) with the interface
optimized for the screen size of
phone or tablet.
<div><br>
</div>
<div>Here in California, I have yet
to visit a field where I didn't
have 3G data service, but I
realize California can be an
outlier in such matters. </div>
<div><br>
</div>
<div>So, of the fields where you
have competed in the last year,
how many had 3G data service?
Edge? and No Data service?</div>
<div><br>
</div>
<div>How many of you have a smart
phone and/or tablet?</div>
<div><br>
</div>
<div>Thanks!</div>
