link would be illegal in Pattern competition. It would be easy enough to just
leave out the telemetry module during competition though. It seems that
the intent of the rule was probably to assure that nothing could be fed back
from model to pilot to aid their control of the model, i.e., to improve the
quality of the aerobatic flight. Electric flyers in particular have been
using data logger equipment like Eagle Tree for some time now to get a good
handle on pack/ESC/motor performance, but they monitor that after the flight as
far as I know. Still, the way rule 4.4 is written, even that seems to be
illegal during competition.</DIV>

<DIV>The type of feedback you can get from the DX8 seems like fairly benign
stuff: battery voltage, signal quality, temperature of something and RPM
if I remember right. I’m not sure how any of this helps you present a
better sequence, but is certainly useful to help you understand what shape your
onboard equipment is in. It might be good to consider amending that rule
at some point in the future, and be very specific about the things you are
allowed to get feedback on, and for that matter, how you can be informed
(audible only, post flight, whatever). Realistically, unless a
helper/caller is staring at a display screen, the most you can probably get is
some kind of audible alert that something just hit a predefined limit. Low
voltage or high temp, then it’s time to land etc. That doesn’t help
you win the round, it just makes it more likely you can fly the next one.</DIV>

setups. Requires purchase of a separate box to update
firmware. Website in Korea that has the updates has had
frequent outages. You CANNOT download the firmware and install
it later. You MUST be hooked to the internet and download it
real time. My perception is that they are more enthralled with
telemetry (that was a year late in being released) than in getting
the basic system up to snuff. Oh, and as far as I know, they
still haven't released the 72mHz module promised last fall, if that
is of any concern.<BR><BR>
