Evidently pattern is near and dear to Michael's heart, he mentioned he worked himself up though the ranks to advanced, not long ago. Rather than re-print what has already appeared in the K-Factor I'm going to write about my experience at the D8 championship in Richland, WA last weekend. Since this was the last contest of the season and my last contest entering as a Sportsman, this article will be written as an encapsulation of my entire rookie season. Understandably, whatever I write still needs to be accepted etc. before being published.
I agree with you on publishing articles like Mike Rigg's Sportsman article in Model Aviation. I have found that as I have aged, my precision flying skills have seemed to diminish. In fact, I still feel somewhat "inferior or less that qualified" to compete and everytime I go to an event, it is my hope to fly well enough so I don't embarrass myself infrom of my peers so I know how Mike feels/felt.

In the August edition of Model Aviation Duane Wilson wrote an article on one of the first RC celeberties, Ed Kazmirski (Kaz). After reading the article, I sent an e-mail to Michael Ramsey (Model Aviation editor). In the e-mail I suggested that he consider soliciting articles for publication that highlight contributors to the hobby of modeling that made an impact (RC, free flight and control line). I suggested that he schedule these articles for periodic publishing in the magazine. He said that he thought that a good idea and they would try to do this. Duane Wilson said that he tried for quite some time to get AMA to publish the article in it's entirety and he resisted the request from AMA to reduce the size to a small one or two page submission.

My point in this is that I think that the AMA is always looking for articles (and they should be) from the membership. I believe that the pattern community (be they SPA, Classic or 2 meter) should e-mail Michael and let them know that as dues paying members they would like to see articles like Mike wrote. In fact, I think that Mike should consider submitting the articel to Michael at AMA and we should insist that it nor be pared down to fit on the aerobatics column.

Mike thanks for the comments on the articles. It's refreshing to know somebody actually reads them. Rex put me up to the first article, it was my way of paying forward for all of his help and support. The guy basically orchestrated a pattern contest in my own backyard to help me and a couple others get started in Pattern. The next article in the series is about the "Fun 'Pattern' Contest" I held for our club members in August. The subliminal message is the contest represents my opinion of how we should grow the sport of pattern. The heck with the box and judge certifications. Get some club members together and hold a contest using non-flying club members as judges. Involve everybody you can! We only flew three (Sportsman) rounds, that was enough for everybody to have a lot of fun. I doubt any of the participants go on the road to other pattern contests like I have, or for that matter buy a 2M pattern plane, but a couple of them have said after their experience they are likely to enter our formally sanctioned pattern contest next May.

Thanks Mike for doing these K Factor articles. I find them a "must" read.
Its good to be reminded of the times when we were all new to the sport.
When I think back to my beginnings I can't help but think how I wouldn't
have ever started without the help of my father. It's surprising how many of
us started because of our fathers. I know in your case Mike that you
basically started in the hobby in Chicago a long time ago largely due to
your fathers interest in RC planes albeit not particularly in pattern. Still
having grown up here and having worked at Al's Hobby shop as a kid you had a
large exposure to pattern fliers. I'm glad your enjoying yourself.
In the 60's and 70's Chicago played a very important part in pattern with
fliers like Ed Kazmirsky and Norm Page. Also we had Goldberg, Midwest,
Du-Bro and Top Flight all centered in our area.
Mike Mueller
