I outsource all of my endgrain balsa cutting, gluing, and bagging to the folks at CST composites. . . they do a fine job. . .

On Wed, Apr 14, 2010 at 8:43 AM, <rcmaster199@aol.com> wrote:
I use epoxy and 3K carbon cloth as I've described before. I vacuum bag the assembly using a Food Saver system. Once you vacuum bag, you'll never go back
Just curious, where do you guys get the end grain balsa? I can't imagine you're cutting your own?
I'll ditto Bob's response on the 1/64 over 1/4" endgrain. More surface area there to glue to fuse. I use a lt. ply ring behind the soft mount to hold the blind nuts. Works....gerrrrrrrr... ate!
I have had very good results with a firewall made of 1/64" plywood laminated on both sides of 1/4" end-grain balsa using polyurethane glue. Lightly spray water on the balsa, smear the poly glue on the balsa and a light, even coat of glue on the plywood. Press everything together, lay a sheet of wax paper on a flat surface, set the firewall on the paper, cover with another sheet of wax paper, and stack a LOT of books on top. The poly glue will foam and penetrate the plywood, the weight is necessary to keep the plywood from being pushed away from the balsa by the foaming glue. The resulting structure is very light, very strong, and offers a wide gluing surface inside the fuselage.

My setup uses a Hyde mount, so I glued 3/32" plywood disks approximately 3/4" diameter to hold the blind nuts on the backside of the fire wall. Nothing is needed on the front, the Hyde mount has a large back surface to spread the load.
I have been flying this in my YS160DZ powered Temptation for 4 seasons now without any problems.
Can anyone advise me on the appropriate composite panel size and material for Glow powered firewalls? My Xigris came with 1/8 ply that I'd like to replace.
