<DIV>A couple decades ago it was fairly common to use club judges only in
Pattern contests, people who seldom if ever flew Pattern. These folks were
extremely well meaning mostly but generally not very well prepared and the
troops usually went home somewhat disgruntled. As the perceived lack of
appreciation by the Pattern people got around, less and less club members were
available to judge. Around that time, schedules started to get more complex so
we decided it was in our best interest to use ourselves to judge.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>There is no hard rule about who should judge....anyone who has the rules,
the eyes and concentration for it can do it</DIV>

<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2> Is there a requirement that you must be a
pilot (entered in some class that is flying) in order to judge at the NAT's?
If not, then what would be wrong with having people sign up as judges only? I
know a few people who go to the NATs to just watch who certainly could qualify
as capable judges. Maybe this would help with the apparent "problem". Just
wondering.</FONT></DIV>

<DIV><SPAN style="DISPLAY: inline-block"></SPAN>In past Nats, pre-semifinals
in F3A, I know Don Ramsey and I scrambled to fill chairs for both the F3A
and Masters Final. If the F3A semifinalists really wanted to judge they
should step forward and be counted....that would make the Chief Judge's job
a heck of a lot easier. But these folks should understand that an assignment
might be the Masters Final OR the F3A Final.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>It must be understood that the guys who aspire to judge the F3A Final
have at least a familiarity with the F sequence and its nuances. Guys who
already fly the sequence, as Jason points out, should have the
requirements hands down, but Derek may be right here also, it's no guarantee
that they can score it correctly, anymore than anyone else. </DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>I'm not sure I like the idea of having these folks step up after
they are defeated, however, having more guys is better than having less. It
would be up to the Chief Judge to make the calls</DIV>

<DIV>I had your #2 answer only Derek, otherwise I think it could work. I
feel an Fai pilot is just as capable as any other pilot to judge his own
class. Also an Fai pilot could be just as objective as and other judge. I
only say this as Masters judges could also be a lesser judge for the
competition if their team member is flying against a rival. Not saying it
happens, but it could. I haven't attended a nats yet, so I don't know how
the judging is. Just my opinion, I know you've been there many times Derek.
I'm sure I don't have a clue. lol <IMG
