Even with the additional ignition module, I have had far more reliable running with my gas engines than I had with glow. If a glow motor does not have the mixture just right, it can deadstick. With gas/ignition, it just doesn't run quite as well. And the price of fuel is no comparison.
Soft mounting with headers/pipes could be an issue (hotter exhaust), but probably not much more than glow.
20 years ago I would have been itching to try something like this, but I'm just not willing at this point to put the time into figuring all this stuff out. I'd rather let someone else work out the kinks. :-) Also, electrics are just too easy, although expensive initially.
I helped to build the Abbra gas for a friend. We used the ZDZ 40 (non F3A version) hard mounted initially but after fluttering one aileron it was decided to install a custom made soft mount. The plane was 11 lbs 5-6 oz. The Abbra is very light airframe and we could not make the 11 lbs. Therefore, meeting weight is probably your first issue. Second issue is noise. I think we were OK using the soft mount and the ES pipe header for gas engines. However, I never had chance to measure noise levels.
I flew the plane 3-4 times and it was evident that the power was was limited compared with the Abbra glow version in doing the old Master schedule. I believe that prop selection could be part of the problem but never had chance to try other props. I think that gas is a good option in the lower classes. Base on this single experience, it could be a problem for Master or F3A.
Probably a stupid question, but has anyone had any success running gas engines in pattern ships? The Brison 2.4 and 3.2 are real powerhouses for example.
I have seen a Black Magic with an Evolution 26GT2 with a header and pipe. 10oz gas tank and flew for +15 minutes. No problem with power, 8500 rpm turning a 18X6 APC prop. Under 11lbs wet.
