<div>My first NATS experience was the last year that they had the BIG TOP with all events going on at the same time. Looking back, I am glad that I had the opportunity to attend that year as going forward the Pattern NATS always seemed a bit barren to me, not much going on. I will never forget watching a Pylon racer practice at one of the practice fields, going by hotel rooms filled with competitors working on helicopters, contol line planes, kids dusted after a long hot day in the sun competing. Something was always going on. I had never seen FAI Pylon, speed, and have not since. It was one of the most memorable NATS that I ever attendid, other then the time I won..lol.

At that point the NATS were still able to be held in less than a month of flying competitions... and all sorts of events were being flown simultaneously. I was just a kid, with a group of Cub Scouts, flying in the AMA Delta Dart competition. (because the Cub Scout leaders arranged for us to go) It was more a field trip to get to see the other events though.

<div><font size="2">There's a "double edged sword" effect of flying many events at once. You may have to pick and choose which to participate in if you desire to compete in several different events. </font>

<div><font size="2">Sure, its nice for the spectators to be able to go from site to site and see many different aspects of aeromodeling all in one day. But if you are actually competing in an event such as Pattern... you aren't going to be doing much spectating until you are done flying.

<div>Part of the allure of attending the NATS as a competitor is (was) being able to observe the other modeling disciplines, such as pylon or CL combat. I guess it is nice in one way to have the whole site for pattern, but not having other events going on simultaneously is a bit of a bummer. It makes it less of a spectator draw.
