<div class=AOLPlainTextBody id=AOLMsgPart_0_91131d27-0ba5-4be9-9d72-0eb945629c13><PRE><TT>Pete and other Focus owners,
I have had the unique opportunity to have Dave Guerin personally assist
withe trimming of (3) of my Focus models including (2) Focus I's and my most
recent Focus II Arch and I flew in Phoenix. Dave's process begins with
measuring the CG, ensuring that at a minimum, it is at least just in front
of the wing tube. Then we fly it and confirm.
In Phoenix, Dave was present for the initial 9 flights. He with uncanny
accuracy, based on the small amount of elevator mix it seemed we needed
(about 4%/2% with 13 degrees of elevator travel) Dave said it needed 1 and
1/4 ounces MORE nose weight...I added and it helped complete the grooviness
and tracking. Remember there are hundreds and hundreds of these models and
pilots who have won every class at every level in the US.
Based on the 1/4 in front of the wing tube CG, you should have less about
0 - 4% pitch based on 12-13 degrees of elevator travel. If you have more,
it is TAIL HEAVY!!! Additionally, my model ended up with 3%/4% rudder
aileron mix. With YS DZ 160 and APC 18.1 x 10 prop we used 1.5% of down
elevator mix beginning offset @ 50% throttle and 3.5% of right rudder mix
offset @ 50% throttle to fine tune the up and down lines.
This process took about 4 flights after I set the up EXACTLY as Dave details
in the instruction manual. I set the bench incidence @ + .30 degrees for
wings and a 0 degree stab with the tail post 1" off the work bench.
The model (piloted by Arch Stafford) won Masters in Phoenix with a total of
10 flights, 4 of those flights contest flights. An excellent example of
following the set-up directions beginning with a proper CG with a capable
model and skilled pilot.
